Google?s Project Glass: An Exercise In Mediocrity?

rose4.26.12So Google X founder Sebastian Thrun was on Charlie Rose last night showing off his latest creation, Project Glass. Which, if you haven't seen by now, is quite possibly one of the most ambitious consumer products to come out of the Googleplex in recent memory. But until Thrun's appearance on Rose, we didn't actually know how the glasses would work other than the sizzle reel that was put together earlier this month. A couple of things struck me as odd, though. Thrun never actually gave any voice commands during his demo of the glasses, while in the video everything was driven by voice. But tha t's not what has me worried about Project Glass. During the interview, Thrun snapped a photo of Rose and uploaded it to his Google+ account. So far, it appears to work as advertised but take a look at the image quality and tell me whether or not it's acceptable in this day and age. It's not, it's terrible.

A-Rod: Cameron Diaz Is One of the Greatest People Ever

Talk about a nice guy! Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz always kept their relationship hush-hush during their time together, but now that they've split the Yankees star is ready to open up about his ex (at least a little bit). Samsung's Q1 2012 profits nearly double year-over-year on higher margins for TVs and phones

Samsung's Q1 2012 profits nearly double year-over-year on higher margins for TVs and phones

The numbers for Samsung's first quarter of 2012 are in and as it expected they are up sharply over the same period from 2011. After predicting profits of 5.8 trillion won it managed to top that, notching an operating profit of 5.85 trillion won ($5.16 billion US) for the quarter, a 98 percent gain over a year ago. Phones accounted for 73 percent of the profit, contributing 4.27 trillion won to the bottom line. As the world awaits the debut of what we assume will be the Samsung Galaxy S III May 3rd powered by its Exynos 4 Quad CPU, there's clearly no shortage of demand for the Galaxy S II and Note. Sales of chips and TVs decreased from last quarter, but like its competitor LG, growing sales of high res tablet panels (we wonder which one that might be), 3DTVs and OLEDs increased profitability. Specifically, the high end 7000/8000 series of HDTVs increased sales by 50 percent from last year, while the company plans to focus on "region-specific" LED models for emerging markets, and high end (and high priced) flat-panels for developed market s.

We're listening in to the earnings call at the moment, and we'll let you know if there's any other details that come out of what is mostly boring numbers talk. So far it's all pretty businessy, although in response to a question executives did confirm that they expect the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note to occupy different segments in terms of size. So there you have it -- the Galaxy S III will (shockingly) not have a 5.3-inch screen. Also, it predictably is trying to continue the trend of global launches, although that hardly puts to rest the issue of how long we may end up waiting for carrier-specific versions here in the US. Check out the rest of Samsung's details in a press release and a few slides from the report embedded after the break.

Google Drive is coming to Linux, tells users to 'hang tight'

Google Drive is coming to Linux, tells users to 'hang tight'

As you may know, there is at least one out and proud Ubuntu devotee on staff. So, when Google Drive was announced, there were a few grumbles from those who noticed Linux was absent from the list of supported platforms. Especially in the wake of Picasa for Linux, many were afraid that Big G was slowly killing off it's (comparably) robust support of the ope n-source OS. But, rest easy, in addition to Dropbox and Ubuntu One, soon enough you'll be able to use Google's offering as well. Google Docs community manager Teresa Wu (we assume, soon enough, that will be Google Drive community manager) swung by a potential customer's Google+ profile to assuage his ire over the lack of Linux support. The message, while not very detailed, was quite clear: "we're working on Linux support -- hang tight!?"

Presenting: Guess the Celebrity Twit Pic!

A very well-known young woman took it easy this week and posted a photo of herself relaxing on Twitter. Can you guess who it is, based solely on a shot of her legs?

Miley Cyrus Twit Pic

The Twitter user in question is...

... MILEY CYRUS!

Indeed , the singer/actress Tweeted the image above on Monday, adding the following caption to the photo:

As you can see i have a very busy Monday ;)

Miley probably wishes that were true, that she could perhaps be out promoting a movie. But it was announced this week that LOL - in which Cyrus stars opposite Demi Moore - will only open in seven cities across the nation. Ouch. Tough break.

The star, meanwhile, looks to be taking a new, laid back approach to Twitter. She has gotten in trouble in the past for expressing certain views over the social network, most recently when fans took issue with what they perceived to be a diss of Jesus Christ.
