The Dictator

Though each of his movies so far has shown diminishing returns, Baron Cohen hasn?t lost me entirely; in fact, I?m eager to see where his career goes next. As a performer, he?s a transfixing enigma, with a monklike commitment to the repellent characters he creates (his resistance to appearing in public as himself runs deeper than just showbiz pranksterism, I think) and a near-superhuman tolerance for social opprobrium. He?s also an agile physical comedian, as he showed in a Peter Sellers-like bumbling-cop role in Hugo, and can even put over a Sondheim song, as he demonstrated in Sweeney Todd. At their best, Baron Cohen?s puerile provocations can tap into deep wells of desire, envy, and shame?the audience laughs because he does things so awful we?d never dare to try them. Now if he would just try doing something he?s never done before.

Seven in Ten Americans Cooking More Instead of Going Out to Save ...

NEW YORK, May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?One of the ways people gauge when an economic recovery is occurring is when Americans start spending more on things like eating out in restaurants. People are dining out. Over three in five U.S. adults (63%) have dined at a fast food restaurant chain in the past month and about half have dined at a local casual dining establishment (53%) and a casual dining restaurant chain (50%). Fewer have dined at either a local fine dining establishment (18%) or a fine dining restaurant chain (9%) while 13% of Americans have not dined at any of these types of restaurants in the past month.

(Logo:?http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20100517/NY06256LOGO)

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,451 adults surveyed online between March 12 and 19, 2012 by Harris Interactive.

Changes in dining out be havior

While Americans are dining out, they are still cutting back in how often they do so. In looking at the past six months, about one-third say they are eating less frequently at fast food chains (36%), casual dining restaurant chains (34%), and local casual dining restaurants (34%). But one glimmer of economic hope is about one in ten Americans say they are eating at these three types of restaurants more frequently.

Interestingly, there is a gender difference as women are more likely than men to say they are dining out less frequently in these three types of restaurants over the past six months. For example, two in five women (41%) say they are dining less frequently at fast food restaurants compared to 31% of men.

Seven in ten Americans (71%) say they find themselves cooking more instead of going out in order to save more money, while over half (57%) say going out used to be a regular occurrence but it is now a luxury. On the flip side, thre e in five U.S. adults (60%) disagree with the notion that they will eat out as often but now usually at a lower priced restaurant. Only three in ten Americans (29%) say they will cut spending in other places in order to still be able to dine out.

Factors in Choosing a Restaurant

There are many different reasons for choosing a restaurant when deciding to go out to eat. For nine in ten Americans (90%) good prices are an important reason while for 84% the mood they are in (for either type of cuisine or type of food) is important. Other things that are important in choosing a restaurant are having a specific menu item people enjoy (81%), a convenient location (80%), broad variety of menu items (78%), special offers (59%), and healthy menu items that fit a dietary need (56%). Two things that three in five Americans say are not important when they choose a restaurant are choosing the same restaurant (59%) and a restaurant with a menu that usually has new ite ms (61%)

So What?

"Consumer restaurant behavior continues to evolve as they manage their budgets in an ongoing tight economy.? At the beginning of the economic downturn we saw consumers saving money by changing their behavior in two ways: eating out less frequently and shifting their eating-out dollars away from Casual Dining towards Fast Food/Quick Service restaurants," according to Mary Bouchard, Vice President and Thought Leader at Harris Interactive.? ?"Now, with several years of experience with constrained budgets, they have shifted even further from the busy-lifestyle convenience of eating out on a regular basis to making time for cooking at home.? When they do eat out, not surprisingly, price is still a primary component of their decision making process."

"Interestingly, while consumers still are driven by a favorite type of food/favorite dish in restaurant selection, the industry overall has begun to see a positive shift towards healthy eating behavior," continues Ms. Bouchard.? "As our recent Harris Poll EquiTrend? also shows, restaurants that offer a broad range of healthy options, such as Subway which is the highest rated quick service restaurant brand, have shown increased revenues and many restaurants of all genres have increased their offering/sales of low calorie/low fat dishes."

Methodology

This Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States between March 12 to 19, 2012 among 2,451 adults (aged 18 and over), of whom 2,172 own a vehicle. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online.

All sample surveys and polls, whether or not t hey use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words "margin of error" as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal.

Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. The data have been weighted to reflect the composition of the adult population. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

These statements conform to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

BBC 6 Music wins prestigious Sony radio gong

By Mark Fordham

Digital radio station BBC 6 Music has been named UK station of the year at the Sony Radio Academy Awards - commonly dubbed the Oscars of radio.

This prestigious award comes just two years after the ailing station was saved from closure due to a campaign by its loyal listeners.

Other winners at the ceremony included football pundits Andy Gray and Richard Keys, who triumphed in the best sports programme category 18 months after being sacked by Sky Sports amid a sexism row.

Meanwhile, BBC Radio Humberside's Betty Smith, 90, and Beryl Renwick, 86, became the oldest ever winner of such an award, after landing the entertainment gong.

The BBC won 22 of 37 awards and the prize for 6 Music is the first time a digital-only service has triumphed in the main category.

Speaking of 6 Music's award, the judges said the station showed "a confidence across its schedule that not only reflects a real passion for music but also a firm understanding of the audience".

Vision-restoring goggles could help people avoid retina implants

1 day

There is much research going on in the vision-restoration sector, and clinical trials are already underway for things like artificial retinas. But a new approach uses a pair of goggles to relay light into the eyes, not unlike the familiar visor worn by Geordi LaForge in Star Trek.

The metaphor isn't perfect, but it serves to illustrate the difference between this system and something like retina replacement. Stanford University's James Loudin tells Nature:?"I'm not well versed in Star Trek anymore, and I don't think Geordi had implants.?However, like his visor, our patients cannot see without the goggles."

Essentially the goggles would have cameras on the front and projectors on the back; the projectors would send images using near-infrared light to a photodiode array (a grid of light-sensing elements) implanted in the eye, which would in turn relay that information to retinal cells. Since the image processing occurs outside the eye and the photodiodes are powered by the light that hits them, the implanted element is much smaller and simpler, and consequently safer and less expensive.

This image from Loudin's paper illustrates how the system works, though of course the real device will look different from these renders:

The downside is that the goggles must always be on in order for people to see. However, once they are on, wearers can look around using normal eye movement,?as if they were seeing the world through normal glasses.

Loudin's research was?published this month in Nature Photonics.?Like the more implant-intensive approaches, the?system is still a ways from being approved and available to the public. But experts suggest it's a matter of years, not decades, before some blind and vision-impaired people?will be sporting technology that was very recently only to be found aboard the Enterprise.

?Did I Hear You Right??- Five Misconceptions on Hearing and ...

Like any sensory system, the auditory or hearing system is complex. And when something goes wrong with your hearing, a hearing aid from a Miracle-Ear hearing center in Peoria, IL can help to restore some of your hearing loss. But with such a complex system comes a number of misunderstandings among patients that Michael Rooney, owner of multiple Miracle-Ear hearing centers in Peoria, IL has come across in his 21 years in the industry. Taking some time out of his day, Rooney sat down to clear-up some of the most common falsehoods on hearing and hearing aids.

1. ?Once I get my hearing aids, my hearing is set for life.?

Like a car needs its oil changed, hearing aids need servicing. If patients purchase hearing aids, they are seen once a week at the Miracle-Ear hearing center in Peoria, IL for 30 days, and then, every three months, thereafter, for check-ups, counseling, and cleaning. Video inspection is also performed every three months, as we ll. If patients have any complaints, hearing aid adjustments are performed free of charge.

2. ?All hearing aids require me to have an impression done of my ear.?

Miracle-Ear hearing centers in Peoria, IL and surrounding areas offer custom-made hearing instruments that do require making an impression of the ear?but they also offer the Open Fits. These models of hearing aids do not require a receiver nor an ear canal fit, and therefore do not require ear impressions.

3. ?There isn?t much I can do to prevent hearing loss.?

There are a number of ways you can care for your hearing health, and prevent any future hearing loss. Good nutrition, and general health improves the functioning of the brain, and can assist in hearing. The most important way to be proactive with your hearing loss is to wear ear protection, such as ear buds or noise-canceling headphones whenever possible in noisy environments.

4. ?My hearing will be rest ored to 100% of its original ability.?

Unfortunately, hearing aids cannot restore an individual to normal, or natural hearing. They can?t cure hearing loss?but they can treat it. It?s an important part of Rooney?s job to establish an expectation with a patient?s hearing loss. So if patients expect to hear like they did when they were a kid, or when they had normal hearing, they are explained clearly and up-front that they are never going to achieve that. However, with the help of hearing aid, Miracle-Ear hearing centers in Peoria, IL promise 100 percent of a patient?s individual ability in improving hearing loss.

5. ?Hearing loss only happens to those in old age.?

Wrong! The largest growing population of noise-induced hearing damage is anywhere from teenagers to mid-20?s, solely because of iPods. With iPods, ear buds are right in their ears, and can cause major damage to the inner and outer ear hair cells. Parents: I f you?re with your child ren, and you can hear their music from their ear buds, it?s too loud.

Gel-filled liner absorbs energy of impacts, may reduce sports-related head injuries

Web edition : 5:40 pm

There is no such thing as a good smack to the head.

Whether you ski down a mountain, play football, or skate with the big boys on a hockey rink, you?re at risk of a sports-related head injury. But the statistics of injuries related to bicycling are what inspired Claire Longcroft, a 16-year-old 11th-grader at Collingwood School in West Vancouver, British Columbia, to design an energy-absorbing liner for helmets.

Why You Should Never Try to Time the Real Estate Market ? Real ...

?Is now a good time to buy my first home?? is an age-old question that all renters ask themselves at some point. The arguments pro and con vary widely ? with some hinging on hard statistics that will show good reason pro and con, and others relying solely on more intangible things like lifestyle, future plans and core values.

The Wall Street Journal printed an?in-depth take on this argument?pro and con, with detailed and well-sourced points of view from both Eric Lascelles, chief economist at money management firm Global Asset Management (pro buying now), and Gary Shilling, president of A. Gary Shilling & Co., an economic consulting firm in Springfield, N.J. (con buying now).

Their arguments in a nutshell:

Mr. L ascelles:??Investors understand that this is the mother of all buyer?s markets, and won?t last forever.? Conditions are amazing with low interest rates that can be locked in for the life of the loan, ample supply and low prices in most markets. Because investors see this opportunity, they?ve been gobbling up properties for themselves. The open window for average home buyers won?t be there long.
?
Mr. Shilling:??Buying a house now would be a disastrous investment if prices fall another 20% or more.? The problem is excess inventories, which will continue to pull prices down. Shilling and his associates have calculated an excess of 2 million housing units in the market.

What?s missing here is a deep discussion of the psychology of homeownership, which can?t be dismissed. If renters have it in their heads that they want to buy a home at some point in their lives, they?re most likely going to lean toward Mr. Lascelles? view of the curren t real estate market. Why not buy now, when conditions are so good? And with investors increasingly taking up more share of the homes being sold each month, there is a sense of urgency that the days of buyers? favor won?t be here forever.

What?s also missing is acknowledgment of the completely individualized situation in each local market, and each household. These high-level arguments are interesting, but unfortunately are meaningless to most of the people sitting at kitchen tables making the decisions to buy or not buy. What goes into those decisions revolves much more around the family finances, job outlook, and neighborhood housing market. Sure, savvy buyers will be reading the news and keeping up with how the overall market is moving. But, at the end of the day the national market forecast and economic indicators are not something you see on the average family?s ?back of the napkin? short list of considerations for whether to buy or not to buy.

Real estate is local, and individual. Because of this, many attempts to ?time? the market by entering at just the right time are either subjective or futile. Buyers are much better off timing their decision with what fits with their own lives.

RunCore InVincible SSD wipes data away with the click of a button

Image

This one goes out to all the Bonds in the world. RunCore, a Chinese company specializing in the production of solid state drives, has cooked up a SATA II solution that should satisfy even the most guarded of privacy fanatics. Living up to its grandiose InVincible moniker, this aptly-named SSD's built to endure extreme temperatures ranging from -45 to 95 degrees Celsius (or -49 to 203 degrees Fahrenheit), read / write data at speeds up to 240Mbps / 140Mbps and protect your 1s and 0s from prying, less-than-reputable eyes. How so? Well, the drive's actual pièce de espionnite aiguë (that's fa ncy for paranoiac fail safe) incorporates a dual-button scheme for clearing away data. Users, much like Neo in ye 'ole Matrix, will have two colored choices to make: select the green button for "intelligent elimination" (aka overwriting of data) or opt for the "less subtle method" offered by the red button which applies a current to the NAND flash memory for actual physical destruction of your data. So, whether you're a high-ranking government official, a spy unlike us or just someone who can't help but look over his / her shoulder, rest assured your secrets can now be safely disposed of. Jump past the break to check out the outfit's informational video and its woefully out of sync audio track.
