Rumours of iPhone 5 fall flat.

Apple has unveiled its fifth-generation smartphone to the masses in an attempt to maintain triple-figure growth for the product line-up.The announcement yesterday which I followed live online went without mention of a redesigned, fourth-generation capable iPhone 5 as many had anticipated.Harun Makandi,an iPhone 4 owner lamented the lack of more significant changes that drew mixed reactions from most of my friends who were following the announcement with me online. The new iPhone 4S comes with 16, 32 or 64GB of storage, will be released in seven countries,on October 14th and it does contain considerable upgrades to its components.

The iPhone 4S retained the same shape and basic design as its predecessor iPhone 4S but added a faster processor, eight-megapixel camera and a voice command assistant feature. The iPhone 4S would be released on October 14 in several countries.Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said the phone was "all new" inside. It included Apple's custom A5 chip, also used in the iPad 2, which would make the phone twice as fast as its predecessor for CPU tasks and seven times faster for graphics due to its dual-core.Despite the speed boost, Apple said the phone would provide eight hours of talk time on 3G networks and nine hours of browsing over wi-fi networks. Apple chief executive Tim Cook said that the iPhone accounted for five percent of the worldwide mobile phone market which is not very bad bearing in mind this phone is for the affluent.

The new phone would also support dual-carrier HSPA networks up to 14.4 Mbps downlink and operate over CDMA networks. The phone would come with the latest version of Apple's smartphone operating system, iOS 5, which would also be made available for previous devices on October 12.The new operating system would not support the first two generations of iPhone or iPod touch.Helsinki based friend of mine,Anna Jenkins was ecstatic about the new iPhone that would come with an additional software feature, enabling users like her to ask questions of a built-in assistant using voice recognition. Apple integrated the "Siri" feature after acquiring a company by the same name last year. One of the most significant statistics revealed yesterday was that iPhone 4 accounted for half of all iPhones sold by Apple as well as a large proportion of the more than 250 million total iOS devices sold to date.

The new iPhone is definitely designed for iOS 5 because the new version of Apple's operating system brings features such as Newsstand which is a newspaper and magazine subscriptions and iMessage, which lets users message each other for free, using wifi. iOS 5 will run on the iPhone 4 and 3GS, as well as the iPad and recent iPod touch modelsiOS 5 also comes with a much-needed update to the iPhone's notification system. Notification Centre provides a home for those updates from applications, missed call notifications and more that otherwise disappear as soon as you unlock your phone.Ville Makinnen a software developer reckoned that the new move where iOS devices can now be activated without being connected to a Mac or PC first is the best news that came from the launch although it was announced earlier this year.

Jason Roberts who works with MOCE a mobile software company in UK was unapologetic on his comments and termed the launch as a disaster. In a strong worded email sent to me this morning in response to my request of seeking his opinion, Jason said and I quote"What most people Contador seem to gloss over is that while Apple is flashing gorgeous little machines with astonishing software on one hand,on the other hand they are collecting and building a digital profile on our habits, vices, politics, religion, location, education, health, banking, gas usage, miles driven, speed, longitude, latitude and web page comments... get the idea". Jason said he is still happy with his Iphone 3GS and iPhone 4, only 1 camera, which makes phone calls,he goes online and does texts.

In my opinion,I know it is in Apples interest to introduce new models, but I think I can easily live without these "new features" that they added yesterday. There's no question Apple failed to dazzle it's fans last night during the first iPhone event since the departure of co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs. It's the fourth year of the iPhone Revolution, and the newest iPhone probably represents one of the most ho-hum launches that Apple has seen in the short history of the product. The 16 months removed from the iPhone 4 had left me thinking that Apple had something much stronger up its sleeve based the fact that it deviated from its usual 12-month launch schedule. Instead, I witnessed a launch that saw a nearly an identical iPhone 4 emerge albeit one with a faster processor, better camera, upgraded antenna, and an intriguing voice-recognition application.
